Cup O' Joe: "How Big Is Your Cup?"

As an event planner, I deal with clients who have different types of budgets. About half of my clients will increase their budgets before their wedding day! Sometimes, I feel like there is a growing Starbucks effect in the wedding industry. Everyone seems to be ordering the grande even though it may be too much for them.

We condition ourselves to the concept that weddings are expensive and expect to get into debt over it. When I think about the other major purchases one willl make in a lifetime, such as buying a care or a house, a wedding is the only one that will last but one day! So why are we so eager to pay years worth of debt for one day?

In today's economy, couples are realizing that they don't have $25,000 lying around and are opting to spend less money on their wedding. Couples shouldn't have to feel bad for ordering the tall if they know that they cannot afford the grande! For those couples who can afford a venti, I am most certainly not judging you. All I ask is that you wisely embrace you cup, whatever size it may be. Don't get caught up with media's hype, encouraging you to spend more than you can afford. Base your wedding expectations on what what you can truly afford. An unrealistic outlook creates disappointments and dissatisfaction. So don't worry about the Jones and enjoy your cup - you've earned it!

  1. You make such a great point. One should never feel embarrassed about having a smaller budget. Some of the best weddings I've photographed have also been the simplest. It was the little things that made them special.
